MARCH 2008

From the Alphamare’s Stall
Spring is popping up all over and everyone is enjoying the great outdoors again. When you visit ARCH, please be aware of where your children are and be sure they are under your watchful eye. Unexpected noises in non-designated areas can cause horses to spook and children to become distracted, creating an unsafe environment. Also, please remember the farm across the driveway is private property unrelated to ARCH, and should be treated as such. Needless to say, no horses on either property should be fed, teased or have objects thrown at them.
Monthly payments are due by the 10th. We depend on prompt payment in order to pay bills, meet payroll, and budget for major expenses, including horses, and to cover the needs of our riders. Medical forms and 2008 insurance is also due. If you know a business, service group, or individual interested in contributing to ARCH, please let me know and I will be glad to contact them.

From the Alphamare’s Desk: Sue Adams – reflections on 20 years
1988 began the dream. Instructor class sign up done, student teaching arranged, non profit papers filed, and a home at Five Point Farm. The Atlantic Riding Center for the Handicapped was incorporated in November of 1988. From that point, financial support was solicited, volunteers were trained, and riders were ready to begin in the spring of 1989. With 15 riders, two specially trained horses, and over 50 volunteers, lessons began in May of 1989. Within eight weeks, two volunteers were trained as instructors to reduce the waiting list. Another horse joined the equine staff, and ARCH went through its first growth spurt.
In August of 1989 ARCH moved to its new home at Rolling Seas Farm which was solely dedicated to our cause. After a stay of 13 years, ARCH moved to its permanent home owning its own property and building a state of the arts facility. The ARCH family increased with over 300 riders a year, over 200 volunteers, five instructors and an equine staff of 12.
Our success stories continue as we help children walk and talk for the first time, hear that surgeries are postponed, grades are going up in school, socialization is happening, and parents are smiling. Our adult riders are rehabilitating from strokes, traumatic brain injuries and war related injuries. Others are maintaining mental and physical benefits through therapeutic horseback riding. Many are employed for the first time and living on their own. Everyone is enjoying a better quality of life because of the therapeutic horseback riding provided at the Atlantic Riding Center for the Handicapped.
What once was my dream has been adopted and nurtured by hundreds of caring people. They continue to give their time, talent, and treasures for a smile, a laugh and a thank you. What a great way to have spent the last 20 years!
At Risk Program for Teens – Our program for junior high school teens with discipline and social problems began this year with one class. Teachers noted that the students’ behavior noticeably improved as a result of the program, and in 2008 we are contracted for two sessions.
Horses for Heroes - ARCH is participating in this national effort to assist recovering soldiers through therapeutic horseback riding. We are working with several organizations, including soldiers from the National Guard, to promote regular sessions of therapeutic riding for wounded veterans. Twelve soldiers from the Vineland Veterans Memorial Hospital enjoyed a visit on October 16, and they have second visit scheduled.
2007 HONORS
Sue Adams, Executive Director, was named Distinguished Woman by the Soroptimist International group for her contributions to ARCH.
Jolene Lauer received recognition through the 2007 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards for service to her community.
Judie Weiner’s work at ARCH was acknowledged by the Points of Light Foundation in July, and she was featured on their website as a Daily Point of Light.
United Way Volunteer – Abby Swisher, our Wednesday lesson manager, was honored this summer for her work at ARCH. United Way representatives brought balloons, candy and a certificate of appreciation here for a surprise presentation. Congratulations, Abby!
Special Thanks – This year we were privileged to receive support from many generous businesses and individuals. Helen Hoffman made a bequest of $50,000, which will used for facility improvements and maintenance.
Outback Steakhouse provided dinner for over 200 Galloping Gala attendees. New Jersey carpenters unions provided much support in the way of Gala ads. The Grand Lodge F&AM donated $5,000, and Steve Tomasso Construction provided mirrors for our indoor ring.
A. E. Stone continues to help us in many ways. We also thank the individuals who supported us through United Way donations. Without all our friends and sponsors we could not continue our programs.
WWW.ARCH206.ORG – Our website was expanded this year, and now includes descriptions of our facility and programs as well as listings of our sponsors and friends. In addition to keeping the ARCH community informed, the website has helped attract new volunteers and riders.
Volunteers Corner
The ARCH Annual Recognition and Awards Dinner has been scheduled for Sunday, February 10, 2008 at Stumpo’s in Somers Pointr. We will also be celebrating our 20th year of helping riders improve their quality of life. Family and friends are welcome.
Thank You Lesson Managers and Volunteers - This year’s vacation/school year transition was the best EVER! Credit goes to lesson managers who coordinated their help, students who fit ARCH into their school schedule, and volunteers who stepped in where needed. Great work, everyone!!!!
Around the Barn
This has not been a good summer for our horses. After two operations, Cowboy was euthanized due to severe lameness. Although there had been offers of retirement homes, he would have been in constant pain. Sparky was operated on for colic, but two days later, he died of complications.
But we welcome Huey, a beautiful paint horse from North Jersey. He was a reliable trail horse, and is proving to be a valuable addition to our program. A second horse, Joker, unfortunately lived up to his name, and could not be brought into the program. We check out many horses in our search for the special few that can handle the demands placed on therapeutic riding horses.
Next year we hope to build a hay storage/maintenance barn. This will enable bulk purchases of hay at a cost savings. We are also hoping to obtain properly fitting saddles for each horse next year. We have had donations, but they don’t always fit our needs.
Featured Rider: Frank Rezza – Frank has been riding with us since May. His stroke three years ago left him unable to speak, and his right side paralyzed. Frank has investigated many therapies, including acupuncture, aqua therapy, and reflexology. He has put aside his wheelchair and leg brace, and now walks with a cane. At ARCH he has gained the ability to ride in two point position and is learning to post a trot. He can now mount his horse with minimal assistance. Frank says his experience here has far surpassed his expectations, and he appreciates all the people who make the experience so enjoyable. Frank looks forward to making even more strides forward.
Sensory Trail – The second phase of our sensory trail is being planned. The Soroptimist International group will be working on further enhancements this winter. This trail stimulates riders though various activities and sensory experiences.
National Certification Workshops – In 2007 we again held two successful NARHA national instructor certification workshops. Each workshop was filled, and we have people on the waiting list for next year.
Give us a call and schedule a visit – better yet – volunteer!!

From the Alphamare’s Desk—Sue Adams
Our family here at ARCH seems to be growing in leaps and bounds. I would like to welcome everyone who has joined us over the last few months. We are so glad you found us and would love feedback from all our family members.
A reminder to drive SLOWLY down our driveway. The barn next door is concerned about their horses being spooked and riders being stepped on or injured when ARCH rider vehicles come down the driveway too fast. Safety is a major concern of everyone here at ARCH and Rolling Seas Farm. Our only recourse will be to increase our speed bumps at a cost of $300 a line. We would need to add an extra 4 lines across the driveway costing the program $1200. These dollars would rather be spent on purchasing more horses than on a problem that can easily be solved by your consideration. Please drive slowly......if you are late, the time traveling down the driveway at high speeds won't make a difference............but it might cause an injury to someone else. Help keep everyone safe.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my office staff, Rindy and Jill, for their continued dedication and hard work. Through their efforts new riders are registered quickly and there are volunteers available to assist the new riders. The office is also graced with a number of adult volunteers, Stacy, Donna, Denise, and Lisa, who file, write thank you notes, and do computer work, keeping the office up to date and moving at a steady pace. A winning team!
The Fall Schedule has Begun – Through school and scout classes, we give children a chance to experience our horses. The classes are in addition to our regular sessions, and volunteers are needed at these times – usually weekday mornings and Sundays. If you can help, please see Jill or Rindy for the monthly schedule.
Calendar Project – Although we thought it was a great idea, and the winning photos were super, an extensive search failed to find a printer who could
print a 2008 calendar at an attractive price. We apologize to those who were looking forward to seeing their photos in a calendar. The winning photos will be displayed shortly in the barn area.
Thanks to Foschi Studios – Foschi Studios pledged 20% of proceeds to ARCH for portraits of children under 14 years taken Oct. 14th and 15th.
Foschi Studios, continued – The Foschi’s are committed to giving back to their community, and we appreciate their continued support. Sofia Foschi was a rider at ARCH for many years.
Horses for Heroes – Twelve soldiers from the Vineland Veterans Memorial Hospital enjoyed a visit on October 16, and they are already planning a spring visit. We hope such visits will become a regular part of their routine. Thanks to everyone who helped make this such a success! If you know a veteran who could benefit from therapeutic riding, please refer him or her to us. Brochures are available in the office.
Special Thanks – The success of the Galloping Gala was made possible with the help of many of our volunteers. To name a few: Lorie Capito, Pat Springfield and Debbie Conover covered the registration desk. Mary Anne Craft and Sharon Garland-Sweeten covered publicity and brought in many auction items. Krista Smart and her husband supplied the margarita machines and wine. Michele Noble and Lisa Keller assisted with checkout. Stockton students Jennifer Fornino and Katie Monacelli manned the sales table.
The great food came from Outback Steakhouse, who supplied a delicious dinner as well as cheesecake for desert. AC Hilton and Artistic Solutions supplied appetizers, and Harrah’s supplied amazing desert cookies and horse head-shaped candy. We thank everyone involved in making this Gala a fun and profitable event.

Our Volunteers
Orientation Scheduled for November 3 – If you have not attended an orientation, please come out on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 1:30 p.m. Orientation will be for about two hours.
Thank You Lesson Managers and Volunteers - This year’s vacation/school year transition was the best EVER! Credit goes to lesson managers who coordinated their help, students who fit ARCH into their school schedule, and volunteers who stepped in where needed. Great work, everyone!!!!
Volunteer of the Season (Summer) – Congratulations to Christina Vasquez who has been named Summer Volunteer! Christina was a great help at our summer camps, and is a trusted sidewalker throughout the year.
Volunteer of the Season (Fall) – Lauren Cancelosi has been named as our Fall Volunteer. Lauren has taken on a lot of responsibility, and we appreciate her dedication. Thanks, Lauren!
Volunteers Needed - Do you have time to volunteer on Saturdays? We need help with classes running from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Have you wondered where the popsicles come from – the volunteers’ refrigerator is always stocked. And some volunteers have blue lips and teeth. We just found that our Thursday lesson manager, Mary Ann Woolbert, is responsible. Thank you Mary Ann - we love them!!
United Way Volunteer – Abby Swisher, our Wednesday lesson manager, was honored this summer for her work at ARCH. United Way representatives brought balloons, candy and a certificate of appreciation here for a surprise presentation. Congratulations, Abby!
It will look good on your resume! - Get details from the flyers next to the time box, or see Jill about the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. The few minutes needed to apply will be worth your while.

Many thanks to Steve Tomasso Construction for the mirrors in the indoor ring. Now, when an instructor tells riders they need to change position, or are looking good, the riders can see for themselves. This gives riders a chance to check their position each time they pass the mirrors.
Featured Rider – Frank Rezza - Frank has been riding with us since May. His stroke three years ago left him unable to speak, and his right side paralyzed. Frank has investigated many therapies, including acupuncture, aqua therapy, and reflexology. He has put aside his wheelchair and leg brace, and now walks with a cane. He can certainly talk! At ARCH he has gained the ability to ride in two point position and is learning to post a trot. He can now mount his horse with minimal assistance. Frank says his experience here has far surpassed his expectations, and he appreciates all the people who make the experience so enjoyable. Frank intends to make even more progress. He is stubborn and sure to succeed! Frank and his wife Linda enjoy the theatre, fine dining, and movies.

Bob Jeffreys and Suzanne Sheppard Clinic – The three day clinic beginning Friday, Oct. 6 was a great success. Eight riders at all levels of skill participated, and the clinic was observed by many auditors. Bob and Suzanne were able to tailor the presentations to each rider specifically. Riders from novice to advanced enjoyed two days of instruction and came away with better knowledge of their horses and how to communicate with them. The auditors also gained valuable information for improving their riding skills. The round pen demonstration on Friday night was entertaining and informative for all. The featured horse was Archie, owned by our instructor Jan Ferry. Archie was able to each Bob some new tricks as well. Thanks, Archie!
The ARCH Annual Recognition and Awards Dinner has been scheduled for Sunday, February 10, 2008. Mark your calendars! Stumpo’s will again provide a great dinner. Bring your family and friends. We will also be celebrating our 20th year of operation – be there!!!

Many thanks to all the volunteers and friends of ARCH who helped make our Volleyball Tournament another success. Over the last 19 years the event has raised approximately $175,000 for ARCH. It is through the efforts of these people that ARCH continues and program rates are able to stay reasonable. We will again need a great deal of help for our signature event, the Galloping Gala. Please lend us a hand and help keep our success story going.
Kudos to Judy Weiner, a cherished volunteer for 19 years. She was recently honored for her volunteer efforts with ARCH by the Points of Lights Foundation.
A great job was done by instructors Heidi, Jan, and Rindy during our pilot school curriculum program for ‘at risk’ teens. The results were impressive and a new group will start this school year.
The ARCH office is buzzing with new registrations, evaluations, and keeping track of billing and, as always, raising funds for ARCH. To make our jobs easier, please pay your monthly fee by the 10th of each month and let us know if your place of business does matching funds or charitable contributions. We only ask you to provide the name and phone number of the contact person and we will do the rest!
Summer Camp
There are a few openings available for the August 20 camp week. Sign up your child now, and tell your friends about this opportunity to learn about horses in a fun environment.
Horses for Heroes
ARCH is joining NARHA in an effort to reach Iraqi and Afghanistan veterans who could benefit from therapeutic horseback riding. If you know of any soldiers who have been wounded physically or mentally, please tell them about ARCH. There is more information on the NARHA website, www.NARHA.org
Also, NARHA is working to receive formal sanction from the Veterans Administration for this service. Currently therapeutic horseback riding is considered ‘recreational’ therapy by the VA. You can help by writing a letter explaining how therapeutic riding has helped you or your rider in a way that is unique. For more information, please see Jill.
Volunteers Corner
Where is Toni? Toni Teschner suffered a broken arm in May (horse related accident of course) and is limited to ground work with her horse for a while. She will return to ARCH as soon as the doctor gives the okay. We miss her and hope for a speedy recovery.
Orientation - An orientation has been scheduled for Saturday, August 4, from 1:30 to 3:30p.m. Immediately following will be a leading clinic for those interested. Please note there will be an additional badge color for advanced leaders who can handle difficult horses. Sign up in the tack room or see Jill. Remember, volunteer hours cannot be used for rewards without attending one orientation session.
Around the Barn
Pat Flanagan is back! We welcome Pat back to the barn. Sitting still was foreign to Pat, and she’s looking forward to caring for the horses again. Unfortunately, this means Jean McClernon’s tenure as barn manager is over. We thank Jean for doing an outstanding job in Pat's absence.
After an uncertain start, Hank is now “with the program”, and is a favorite of many riders and volunteers. He’s strong and quiet – a winning combination for an ARCH horse!
Cowboy is awaiting surgery for a bone chip. We hope this will enable him to return to soundness and rejoin the program, he’s missed by many riders for his easygoing gaits.
In House Horse Show
Our annual Horse Show was a great success, with classes for riders, parents, and volunteers. Thanks to judges Jean McClernon (equitation), and Ellen Stark (trail). Thanks also to the volunteers who helped run the show, especially Rich Adams and Tom Faust for the good hamburgers and hotdogs. Photos of the show can be seen at www.arch206.org. Riders results are as follows:

Fund Raising
The sole purpose of ARCH is to enable riders to benefit from therapeutic horseback riding. However, the costs of administration, maintaining the facility, and caring for its equine staff are constantly rising. Lessons cost each rider $130/month, but the actual cost to ARCH is $390 per rider per month.
To prevent raising fees to riders, we must constantly raise funds by other means – clinics, the annual volleyball tournament, Galloping Gala, etc. We ask that if at all possible parents as well as volunteers help and support these events.
Galloping Gala
Mark the calendar – September 15 is the date of this year’s Gala. This year’s event will be catered by Outback Steakhouse and should be the best yet!
We need items to auction, which can include tickets to events, gift certificates, etc. Please ask the businesses you patronize to be a sponsor or donate a gift certificate. Sponsors are listed in the event program, major sponsors will be listed on our website as well.
Bob Jefferies/Suzanne Sheppard Clinic
We are proud to present a two day horse training clinic October 6 & 7. Details will be posted on our website shortly. Please see Rindy to sign up.
A Pony’s Prayer
I pray that gentle hands may guide my feet; I ask for kind commands from voices sweet; At night a stable warm with scented hay, Where, safe from every harm, I’ll sleep till day. – Anonymous
Featured Rider – Michael Clerico
Michael has been part of the program at Atlantic Riding Center for the Handicapped since he was 2 years old. He started riding at the program with the Seashore House for early intervention for cerebral palsy. Michael is now 9 years old and much improved in his riding and life skills. Michael usually rides Copper for his lessons, and Joan Keating is his instructor.
Michael is a real sports fan. He loves the Phillies baseball team, and his favorite player on that team is Ryan Howard. He is also a big Eagles fan.
Michael loves to play baseball, swim in the pool, tell jokes, and listen to music. He really likes American Idol, and goes to their concerts every time they are in Atlantic City.
Michael has many friends including everyone here at ARCH.
From our Instructors
Congratulations to Melissa Newcomb and Val Flesch who both received their instructor certification in May. We appreciate the dedication and time it takes to earn certification – well done!!
We ask that volunteers wear their badges while working. This enables instructors to know which volunteers have the knowledge and ability to help with the tasks at hand.
Instructors chose Mary Anne Woolbert, Thursday lesson manager, as the spring volunteer – congratulations to Mary Anne for a job well done!

Junior Rider – Lindsey Bazard
Most Improved Rider – Dillon Tarapelli
Adult Volunteer – Lisa Ritter

Many thanks to John Clark and Stacy Guerrini for painting the horseshoes and making the frames. Thanks to Barney Baxter for donating his large shoes to the cause.
Helen Hoffmann Gives to the ARCH Program
Helen Hoffmann has always encouraged her daughter, Sue Adams, in her efforts on behalf of ARCH. Helen recently made an “early bequest” of $50,000 to the program – a most wonderful gift that will do so much to help maintain and improve our facilities, and help us continue our programs. All of us at ARCH thank Helen from our hearts, and wish her many years of health in which to see the benefits of her generosity.

These shots can be life-saving to our equine partners, and also help ensure that our program will run uninterrupted. This is also an expensive part of health care. Contributions toward shots for your favorite horse would be most welcome.
Bob Garson – Featured Rider
Bob Garson seems to be our oldest rider – at least no one else is claiming that distinction! He is not new to horses, and in fact won a race at the Garden State Racetrack in 1945!!! Bob looks forward to riding at ARCH each week, and is great fun for his instructor, Jan, to work with.

Congratulations to Trisha Springfield, who has been named as the 2007 Winter volunteer. Trisha volunteers as an exercise rider, and also helps with lessons. Thanks, Trisha!
